Alberta Population by religion

The largest faith in Alberta is Christianity and about half of the Alberta population (48.1%), reported that they were affiliated with a Christian religion. Non-Christian faiths account for 11.8%, and the remaining 40.1% are classified as unaffiliated, which can mean agnostic, atheist, or “nothing in particular.”

With immigration, there were growing proportions of the population who reported religious affiliations other than Christianity. These religions included Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist.

Indigenous and smaller faiths are a minority and account for 1.3% of the Alberta Population

Religion Percentage in Alberta

Christianity is the largest religion in Alberta. About 2,009,820 or 48.1% of people identified themselves as Christians and follow various branches of Christianity. Roughly 40.1% of Alberta’s population had no religious affiliation and it’s increasing with every census count.

With immigration patterns, there were growing proportions of the population who reported religious affiliations other than Christian. These religions included Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Jews, and Buddhist. In 2021, about 10.5% of the Alberta population reported affiliation with one of these religions. 

Islam is the second-largest religion in Alberta. In 2021, people who identified themselves as Muslim made up 4.8% of the population, Sikh 2.5%, Hindu 1.9%, Buddhist 1%, and Jewish 0.3%. Indigenous religions are at 0.5% and other small faiths account for 0.8% of the population.

Christianity in Alberta

As per Canadian Census 2021, 48.1% of the Alberta population reported that they were affiliated with a Christian religion. Roughly 2,009,820 people or approx half of the population follow Christianity. 

Roman Catholics were the largest Christian religious group in 2021.  About 833,025 or 19.9% of people identified themselves as Roman Catholic. Its followed by the various branches of Protestantism and collectively followed by 494,070 adherents or 11.9% of the population.

Next comes the Orthodox Christians at 1.5%, Latter Day Saints (1.1%), Jehovah’s Witnesses (0.4%), and various other non-specified Christians and other traditions.

Protestantism in Alberta

As per Census 2021 the various branches of Protestantism and collectively followed by 494,070 adherents or 11.9% of the Alberta population. United Church is the largest and it has 153,820 adherents or 3.7% of Alberta population followed by the Anglican (2.3%) and Lutheran (1.9%).
