The largest faith in Newfoundland and Labrador is Christianity and 82.4% of the population reported that they were affiliated with a Christian religion. Non-Christian faiths account for 1.6%, and the remaining 16% are classified as unaffiliated, which can mean agnostic, atheist, or “nothing in particular.”

With immigration, there were growing proportions of the population who reported religious affiliations other than Christianity. These religions included Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist.

With immigration patterns, there were growing proportions of the population who reported religious affiliations other than Christian.  In 2021, people who identified themselves as Muslims made up 0.8% of the population, Hindu 0.2%,  Sikh 0.2%, and Buddhist 0.1%. Other small faiths account for 0.2% of the population.

Christianity in Newfoundland and Labrador

As per Canadian Census 2021, 82.4% of the Newfoundland and Labrador population reported that they were affiliated with a Christian religion. 

Roman Catholics were the largest Christian religious group in 2021.  About 159,875 or 31.8% of people identified themselves as Roman Catholic. Anglican is the second largest and it has 108,030 adherents or 21.5% of the Newfoundland and Labrador population followed by the United Church (12.1%) and Methodist  (5.9%).
