Dutch Canadians: Population, Immigration Trends & Demographics
Dutch Canadians are people living in Canada who have full or partial Dutch ancestry. Individuals of Dutch origin form a well-established community across North and South America. Dutch immigration to Canada began with United Empire Loyalists and expanded significantly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in Western Canada and major cities such as Toronto.
Following World War II, a large wave of Dutch immigrants—including war brides—arrived in Canada, with most settling in urban centres like Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver. Over time, Dutch Canadians integrated rapidly into Canadian society while maintaining strong cultural and religious institutions.
Dutch Canadians make up approximately 2.72% of Canada’s total population. According to the 2021 Canadian Census, there were about 988,585 people of Dutch descent in Canada, including those of full or partial ancestry. Ontario has the highest concentration of Dutch Canadians among all provinces.
