Norwegian Canadians: Population, Immigration Trends & Demographics

Norwegian Canadians are Canadians who have full or partial Norwegian ancestry or people who emigrated from Norway. People of Norwegian ancestry form an important group in several countries in North and South America. They are the largest group among Norther Europeans in Canada.

Norwegian Canadians account for about 1.28%  of the total population of Canada. According to the Canadian Census 2021, there were 466,495  people of Norwegian descent in Canada. Alberta is the province with the highest percentage of Norwegian population in Canada.

Alberta, with 154,535 people of Norwegian ancestry, has the largest population of Norwegian Canadians in Canada followed by British Columbia (137,175) and Saskatchewan (70,215).

Percentage-wise Saskatchewan  (6.36%) has the highest percentage of Norwegian followed by Yukon (3.76%) and Alberta  (3.70%).

Vancouver Metropolitan area with 45,595 people of Norwegian ancestry, has the largest population of Norwegian Canadians. It’s followed by Edmonton (45,400) and  Calgary (39,065).
