Religion in Nicaragua

Christianity is the largest religion in Nicaragua and  84.8% of the population follows Christianity. Among Christians in Nicaragua, Catholics have the most adherents followed by the Protestants

According to the 2020 report by the Latino Barometer report,  44.9% of the population followed Roman Catholicism; 38.9% Protestant; 0.6% Jehovah’s Witnesses, and 0.6% Mormon.

About 13.7% of the population don’t affiliate with any religion; 0.3% are Atheists; 0.1% are Agnostic and 0.2% have no answer.

Non-Christian Faith includes Jewish, Islam, Baháʼí Faith, and Buddism are the main minority religions.

Race and Ethnicity in Nicaragua 

The majority of the Nicaraguan population is composed of mestizos, roughly 69%, while 17% of Nicaragua’s population is white, with the majority of them being of Spanish descent, while others are of German, Italian, English, Turkish, Danish or French ancestry.

About 9% of Nicaragua’s population is black and mainly resides on the country’s Caribbean (or Atlantic) coast. The remaining 5% of Nicaraguans are indigenous, the descendants of the country’s original inhabitants.
