In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in Maine, comprising 90.16% of the total population. It was followed by the Hispanic or Latino population whose share was 1.95%.
Black or African American was the third largest group at 1.84%. Two or more races are at 3.93% & Asians at 1.22%

European Ancestry in Maine
Non-Hispanic Whites account for nearly 90.16% of Maine’s population. English, Irish, and French Americans have made up the three largest European ancestry groups in Maine. As per the Census report, English Americans made up 17.1% of the population and numbered 230,520 members.
Irish Americans made up 16.2 % of the population and numbered 217,609. French Americans made up 12.9 % of the population and number 173,624 followed by French Canadian ancestry at 7.8% of the population and number 104,953.
Beside them Europeans who make good numbers are German (7.5%), Italian (5.4%), Scottish (4%), Polish (2.3%), and Swedish (1.6%)
Hispanics and Latinos in Maine
Hispanics and Latinos are the second-largest groups in Maine after non-Hispanic European Americans. Around 1.95% of Maine’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity. Mexican (0.4%), Puerto Rican (0.4%), Cuban (0.1%), and other Hispanic or Latino origin (0.6%).
African Americans in Maine
As of 2020, those of African ancestry accounted for 1.84% of Maine’s population. The largest African American population in 2023 is Portland (68,063), Lewiston (36,615), Bangor (31,920), and South Portland (26,428).
Asian Americans in Maine
Asian Americans are a sizable minority group in Maine. Americans of Asian descent formed 1.22 % of the population. Its ethnic Asian population has grown rapidly since the late 1990s; the majority are Indians, Filipinos, Vietnamese, and ethnic Chinese.
Multi-Race in Maine
Multiracial individuals are also a visible minority in Maine. People identifying as multiracial form 3.93% of the population, and number around 54,000 people.
