Idaho the 38th largest U.S. state by population has a racially and ethnically diverse population. As of 2020, White (Non-Hispanic)  are the largest group in Idaho followed by Hispanic or Latino Americans.

Ethnic and Racial Percentage

In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in Idaho, comprising 78.87% of the total population. It was followed by the Hispanic or Latino population whose share was 13.02%.

Multiracial populations were at 4.23% and Asians at 1.42%. The American Indian population was at 1.03% in Idaho.

Ancestry in Idaho

As per Census Studies and estimate German, English, Irish, American, and Scottish have made the five largest ancestry groups in Idaho. In 2020, 5.4% of the population considered themselves to be of only American ancestry (regardless of race or ethnicity). Many of these were of English or Scotch-Irish or European descent; however, their families have lived in the state for so long they choose to identify as having “American” ancestry or do not know their ancestry.

European Ancestry in Idaho

Non-Hispanic Whites account for nearly 78.87% of Idaho’s population. German, English and Irish Americans have made up the three largest European ancestry groups in Idaho. As per the Census report, German Americans made up 15.3% of the population and numbered 272,803 members.

English Americans made up 14.7% of the population and numbered 262,554. Irish Americans made up 8.2% of the population and number 142,980 followed by Scottish ancestry at 3.3% of the population and number 58,587

Hispanics and Latinos in Idaho

Hispanics and Latinos are the second-largest groups in Idaho. Around 13% of Idaho’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity. The largest groups are Mexican (10.6%), Puerto Rican (0.2%), Cuban (0.1%), and other Hispanic or Latino origin (1.3%).

Multi-Race in Idaho

Multiracial individuals are also a visible minority in Idaho and they are the third largest group. People identifying as multiracial form 4.23%  of the population, and number around 77,808  people. 

African Americans in Idaho

African Americans are a smaller minority in the state. As of 2020, those of African ancestry accounted for 0.80% of Idaho’s population.

Asian Americans in Idaho

Asian Americans are a sizable minority group in Idaho. Americans of Asian descent formed 1.42 % of the population. Its ethnic Asian population has grown rapidly since the late 1990s; the majority are Indians, Filipinos, Vietnamese, and ethnic Chinese.

Native Americans in Idaho

Native Americans are a smaller minority in the state. Native Americans made up 1.03% of Idaho’s population and number 19,000 individuals as of 2020. The Native Tribes of Idaho are Kootenai, Kalispel, Coeur d’ Alene,  Palouse, Nez Perce, Northern Paiute, and Shoshone – Bannock.
