European Ancestry in Louisiana

Non-Hispanics Whites account for nearly 56% of Louisiana’s population. French, German, and Irish Americans have made up the three largest European ancestry groups in Louisiana. As per the Census report, French Americans made up 9. 6% of the population and numbered 444,664 members. German Americans made up 6.2% of the population and numbered over 288,829. 

Irish Americans comprised 6.1% of the population, number close to 282,788 followed by English ancestry at 4.6% of the population and number close to 213,455.

Besides them, Europeans who make good numbers are  Italian (4.2%). Scottish (0.9%), Scotch-Irish (0.8%), and Polish (0.4%)

African Americans in Louisiana

As of 2020, those of African ancestry accounted for 31.18% of Louisiana’s population. Louisiana’s population had the second largest proportion of Black and African Americans in the United States after Mississippi.  The Black and African American populations have been historically concentrated throughout much of the state.

A substantial proportion of Louisiana’s African American population resides in the New Orleans metropolitan area, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport. Other urban areas, such as Lafayette and Lake Charles, also host significant Black populations. Additionally, there are numerous Black residents living in smaller cities, towns, and rural areas across the state.

Hispanics and Latinos in Louisiana

Hispanics and Latinos are the third-largest groups in Louisiana after non-Hispanic whites and African Americans. Around 6.92% of Louisiana’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity. Louisiana has a growing Mexican and Central American population. The majority of Latinos in Louisiana are of Mexican origin (38%). Next are Puerto recipes at 10%, Cuban (5.5%), Salvadoran (3.1%), Dominican (1.3%), and other origins.

Asian Americans in Louisiana

Asian Americans are a sizable minority group in Louisiana. Americans of Asian descent formed 1.83%  percent of the population. Asian Indians were the largest group of Asian Americans in the state, followed by the Chinese. Filipinos were the third-largest single Asian American ethnicity.

Subsequent waves of immigration have brought many Chinese from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China, as well as Indians, Middle Easterners, Koreans, Japanese, Southeast Asians, and other Asians, to New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and other cities in the state. The Vietnamese began migrating to the southern part of the state and the Gulf Coast region after the Fall of Saigon in 1975. Since then, the Vietnamese have become one of the largest Asian populations in the state. The Vietnamese have also come to dominate the fishing and shrimping industry in southeast Louisiana. Filipinos had immigrated all the way to the Southern United States from the Philippines. 

Multi-Race in Louisiana

Multiracial individuals are also a visible minority in Louisiana. People identifying as multiracial form 3.35%  percent of the population, and number around 322,549 people.
