Ohio the seventh-largest U.S. state by population has a racially and ethnically diverse population. As of 2020, White (Non-Hispanic) are the largest group in Ohio followed by African Americans.

Ethnic and Racial Percentage

In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in Ohio, comprising 75.89% of the total population. It was followed by the Black or African American population whose share was 12.35%.

The Hispanic or Latino population was the third largest group at 4.22%. Two or more races are at 4.25% & the Asian population is at 2.51%.

Ancestry in Ohio

As per Census Studies and estimate German, Irish, English, Americans, and Italians have made the five largest ancestry groups in Ohio.  Ohio has people who claim ancestry from dozens of countries around the world. Still, only 12 countries have more than 1% of people claiming ancestry, 

In 2020, 6.6% of the population considered themselves to be of only American ancestry (regardless of race or ethnicity). Many of these were of English or Scotch-Irish descent; however, their families have lived in the state for so long that they choose to identify as having “American” ancestry or do not know their ancestry.

European Ancestry in Ohio

Non-Hispanics White account for nearly 76% of Ohio’s population. German, Irish, and English Americans have made up the three largest European ancestry groups in Ohio. As per the Census report, German Americans made up 22.3% of the population and numbered over 2.6 million members. Irish Americans made up 12.5 % of the population and numbered over 1.5 million. 

English Americans made up 8% of the population and numbered close to 1 million followed by Italian ancestry at 6% of the population and numbered over 0.7 million. Other Europeans who are in good percentage are Polish (3.6%), French (1.9%), Scottish (1.8%), Hungarian (1.4%), Dutch (1.3%), and Welsh (1.1%)

African Americans in Ohio

As of 2020, those of African ancestry accounted for 12.5% of Ohio’s population and they make the second largest group after Non-Hispanic white. Most of the cities with the largest black populations are in the Cleveland area, led by East Cleveland and Warrensville Heights, both 91.8 % black.

Other Ohio cities with majority black populations are Bedford Heights (72.8 %), Maple Heights (70.6 %), Trotwood (68.4 %), Forest Park (64.9 %), Euclid (58.1 %), Bedford (53.5 %), and Cleveland (51.6 %).

Hispanics and Latinos in Ohio

Hispanics and Latinos are the third-largest groups in Ohio. Around 4.42% of Ohio’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity.  The largest groups were Mexicans and  Puerto Rican. Besides these two groups it also populations of Cubans Colombians, Venezuelans, and Dominicans, among numerous other groups.

Asian in Ohio

Asian Americans are a sizable minority group in Ohio. Americans of Asian descent formed 2.55 percent of the population. Its ethnic Asian population has grown rapidly since the late 1990s; the majority are Indians, Filipinos, Vietnamese, and ethnic Chinese.

Cities with the largest Asian populations are Dublin (17.2 percent), Blue Ash (11.9 percent), Solon (11.2 percent), and Mason (10.2 percent). Dublin is outside Columbus. Both Blue Ash and Mason are near Cincinnati.

*US Census recognized five racial categories (White, Black or African American, Asian American, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander) as well as people of two or more races. It also classified respondents as “Hispanic or Latino” or “Not Hispanic or Latino”, identifying Hispanic and Latino as an ethnicity (not a race), which comprises the largest minority group in the nation.
