New York is a state in the northeastern United States. It is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east; it has a maritime border with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the northwest. 

New York (State) is the fourth most populous state in the United States.  As per the  United States Census Bureau, the population of New York (state) in 2020 is 20,201,249 (20.2 million)

Demography of New York

Religion and Affiliations

Christianity is the majority religion in New York followed by 60% of the population.  Next comes the Unaffiliated population, 27% of the population doesn’t follow or adhere to any faith or religion.  The largest Christian denomination in New York is Roman Catholic followed by Protestants. 

Other non-Christian-based religions and faiths are followed by 12% of the population and include  Jews (7%), Islam (2%), Hinduism (1%), Buddhism(1%), and other smaller faiths.

Race and Ethnicity in New York

In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in New York State, comprising 52.47% of the total population. It was followed by the Hispanic or Latino population whose share was 19,54%. Black or African American was the third largest group at 13.66%. Asian population also has a good percentage in New York State with a share of 9.49%. Two or more races are at 3.57%.

Ancestry in New York

As per Census Studies and estimate Italian, Irish, German, and American have made the largest ancestry groups in New York. English, Polish, and West Indian ancestry are also in good numbers.

New York has a high percentage of foreign-born residents. According to data from 2004, over 20% of the state’s total population was classified as foreign-born. 

The state of New York has the 2nd highest population of Asian Americans in the nation. Percentage-wise, the state ranks 6th when compared to the other 49 states. 

New York’s total population of African Americans ranks as 2nd in the nation, while it ranks 13th in terms of the percentage of African Americans.

Cities and Counties in New York

New York City is also the most populated city in New York State. Nearly 43% of New York state’s population lives in  New York City. Next comes the City of Buffalo, with just over 250,000 residents. The most populated counties in New York are Kings County (2,648,771), Queens County (2,358,582), and New York County (1,664,727).
