Native Hawaiian in United States

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders are those having origins in any of the original peoples of Polynesia, Melanesia, or Micronesia. Over half of Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders identified with more than one race.

In the 2020 Census, 622,000  people (0.2%) identified as Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders alone, up from 540,013 people (0.2%) in 2010. Coupled with the 714,000 people who identified as Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander in combination with another race group (such as Asian or White), the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone or in combination population totaled about 1.36 million people and 0.4% of the total population.

Census Number and Percentage

The Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone populations grew by 27.8% between 2010 and 2020. In comparison, the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander combination populations grew faster, by 30.8% since 2010. 

In the 2020 Census, 622,000  people (0.2%) identified as Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders alone, Coupled with the 714,000 people who identified as Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders in combination with another race group (such as Asian or White).

The Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders alone or in combination population totaled about 1.36 million people and 0.4% of the total population.

Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander population by State

The term “Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander” refers to people having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, and the Marshalls or other Pacific Islands. Most of Pacific Islander Americans are of Native Hawaiian, Samoan, and Chamorro origin.

Most of them live in urban areas of Hawaii and California, but they also have sizeable populations in Washington, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Florida, Arizona, and New York. On the other hand, Pacific Islander Americans represent the majority (or are the main ethnic group) in American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands, from where many of them are natives.
