Native Americans in United States

American Indians and Alaska Natives are those having origins in any of the original peoples of North, Central, and South America. There are 574 federally recognized tribes living within the U.S., about half of which are associated with Indian reservations. As defined by the United States Census, “Native Americans” are Indigenous tribes that are originally from the contiguous United States, along with Alaska Natives.

According to the 2020 Census, 3.7 million people, or 1.1%, reported American Indian or Alaska Native ancestry alone. 9.7 million people (2.9% ), reported American Indian or Alaska Native in combination with one or more other races. The American Indian and Alaska Native alone population grew by 27.1%, and the American Indian and Alaska Native in combination population grew by 160% since 2010.

The states with the highest percentage of Native Americans in the U.S. are Alaska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Montana, and North Dakota. In absolute numbers, The top States are California, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and New York.
