Ethnic and Racial Composition

In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in Massachusetts, comprising 67.55% of the total population. It was followed by the Hispanic or Latino population whose share was 112.63%.

Asian was the third largest group at 7.18%. African American population is at 6.50% and Two or more races are at 3.57%.

European ancestry in Massachusetts

Non-Hispanic Whites account for nearly 67.55% of Massachusetts’s population. Irish, Italian, and English Americans have made up three of the largest European ancestry groups in Massachusetts. As per the Census report, Irish Americans made up 19.1% of the population and numbered 1,316,094 members.

Italian Americans made up 11.6% of the population and numbered 802,173. English Americans made up 8.9% of the population and numbered 722,668 followed by French ancestry at 5.5% of the population and number 375,864. German Americans are Number 5 and made up 5.4% of the population and numbered 373,108.

Hispanics and Latinos in Massachusetts

Hispanics and Latinos are the Second-largest groups in Massachusetts. Around 12.63% of Massachusetts’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity.  Massachusetts ranks first in the nation (out of 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.) for the percentage of Hispanics of non-Mexican origin, with 94% of the Hispanic population being of non-Mexican origin.  The largest population is Puerto Ricans followed by Dominicans and Salvadorans.

Asian Americans in Massachusetts
