Montana is a state in the Mountain West sub-region of the Western United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the west; North Dakota and South Dakota to the east; Wyoming to the south; and by the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan to the north. 

Montana is the seventh-least populous state of the United States and Its fourth-largest U.S. state by area. The total Land area is 145,552 square miles (376,980 square kilometers) and an average of 7 people for every square mile. This makes Montana the 3rd Least densely populated state in the US.

Religion and affiliations

Christianity is the majority religion in Montana followed by 65% of the population.  The largest Christian denomination in Montana is Protestant (42%); Roman Catholics (17%); Mormonism (4%); Eastern Orthodoxy (1%); Jehovah’s Witnesses (1%).

Next comes the Unaffiliated population, 30% of the population doesn’t follow or adhere to any faith or religion. Other non-Christian-based religions are followed by 5% of the population and include Jewish, Hinduism, Buddhism, Muslim, and other smaller faiths.

Race and Ethnicity 

In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in Montana, comprising 83.13% of the total population. It was followed by the American Indian population whose share was 5.96%. Two or more races population was the third largest group at 5.05%. Hispanic or Latino is at 4.17%

As of 2022, Montana is divided into 56 counties. The most populated counties in Montana are Yellowstone (158,980) and Missoula (117,441) counties. The largest county by area is Beaverhead County (5,543 sq mi)

The most populated city in Montana is Billings with 117,116 residents. It’s followed by Missoula (73,489) and Great Falls (60,442).
