Costa Rica Population and Religion

Costa Rica officially the Republic of Costa Rica is a country in Central America. It is bordered by Nicaragua to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, and a maritime border with Ecuador to the south of Cocos Island.

According to the last census of Costa Rica (2011), the population of Costa Rica was 4,301,712. As per the UN World Population Prospects report, the population of  Costa Rica in 2024 is 5,246,714 (5.2 million)

Religion in Costa Rica

Christianity is the largest religion in Costa Rica and  83.1% of the population follows Christianity. Among Christians in Costa Rica, Catholics have the most adherents followed by the  Protestants.

For the Latest estimates, According to the 2020 report by the Latino barometer,  54.8% of the population followed Roman Catholicism, and 26.8%  are Protestants (25% Evangelical;  0.6% Methodist; 0.2% Baptism; 0.7% Adventist and 0.3% others protestant churches). Other Christians include 0.8% Jehovah’s Witnesses, and 0.7% Mormons.

About 15.9% of the population doesn’t affiliate with any religion. Non-Christian-based faith population is at 1.2%. Non-Christian Faith includes Jewish, Islam, Baháʼí Faith, and Buddism are the main minority religions.

Race and Ethnicity in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a multi-ethnic nation, home to people of different races, ethnicity, and national backgrounds. The majority of the  population is composed of mestizos and whites, roughly 83.64%. Mestizos are mixed Amerindian and European ancestry (majority of them being of Spanish descent). 

The white population includes European Costa Ricans (of European ancestry), primarily of Spanish descent, with significant numbers of Italian, German, English, Dutch, French, Irish, Portuguese, and Polish families, as well a sizable Jewish community. 

The Mulatto segment (mix of white and black) represented 6.7% and About 2,42% of are indigenous, the descendants of the country’s original inhabitants.

Most of Indigenious live in secluded reservations, distributed among eight ethnic groups: Quitirrisí (in the Central Valley), Matambú or Chorotega (Guanacaste), Maleku (northern Alajuela), Bribri (southern Atlantic), Cabécar (Cordillera de Talamanca), Guaymí (southern Costa Rica, along the Panamá border), Boruca (southern Costa Rica) and Térraba [es] (southern Costa Rica).

1.05 % of Nicaragua’s population is black and mainly African ancestry and 0.21% of Chinese ancestry.
