List of Counties in New York
A county is an administrative subdivision of a US state or territory. As of 2022, New York is divided into 62 counties. Excepting the five boroughs of New York City, New York counties are governed by NY County Law, and have governments run by either a Board of Supervisors, or a County Legislature, and either an elected County Executive or appointed county manager.
Five of New York’s counties are each coextensive with New York City’s five boroughs. They are New York County (Manhattan), Kings County (Brooklyn), Bronx County (The Bronx), Richmond County (Staten Island), and Queens County (Queens).
Kings County with a population of 2.6 million is the most populous and Hamilton County is the least populated. The largest county by area is St. Lawrence County (2821 sq. mi.) and the smallest is New York County (33.77 sq. mi.)
