In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in Vermont, comprising 89.13% of the total population. It was followed by the Two or more races population whose share was 4.59%.

Hispanic or Latino was the third largest group at 2.41%. The Asian population is at 1.78%.

Demography Trends

While alone (Non-Hispanics) in Vermont

Vermont was the second-whitest state in the U.S. after Maine. Non-Hispanic Whites account for nearly 89.1% of Vermont’s population. Irish, English French, and German Americans have made up the largest European ancestry groups in Vermont. As per the Census report, Irish Americans made up 16.8% of the population and number 104,726 members. English Americans made up 16.1% of the population and number 100,545

French Americans made up 10.1% of the population and number 62,988 followed by German ancestry at 9.3 % of the population and number 58,257.

In 2020, 8.1% of the population considered themselves to be of only American ancestry (regardless of race or ethnicity). Many of these were of English or Scotch-Irish descent; however, their families have lived in the state for so long that they choose to identify as having “American” ancestry or do not know their ancestry. Some of their ancestry dates to the original thirteen colonies.

Multi-Race in Vermont

Multiracial individuals are also a visible minority in Vermont. People identifying as multiracial form 4.59% of the population, and number around 71,761 people. 

Hispanics and Latinos in Vermont

Hispanics and Latinos are the third-largest groups in Vermont. Around 2.41% of Vermont’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity.  It has the smallest number of Hispanics of any state in the country but not the lowest percentage of Hispanics, which is found in West Virginia.

African Americans in Florida

Black or African Americans are a minority group in Vermont. As of 2020, those of African ancestry accounted for 1.34% of Vermont’s population.

Asian Americans in Vermont

Asian Americans are a minority group in Vermont. Americans of Asian descent formed 1.78% of the population. Its ethnic Asian population has grown rapidly since the late 1990s; the majority are Indians, Filipinos, Vietnamese, and ethnic Chinese.

Native Americans in Vermont

Native Americans are a smaller minority group in Vermont. Native Americans made up 0.31% of Vermont’s population and number 1,986 individuals as of 2020. 

Pacific Islanders in Vermont

Americans with origins from the Pacific Islands are the smallest minority in Vermont.  They made up 0.03% of Vermont’s population
