Demography Trends
While alone (Non-Hispanics) in Vermont
Vermont was the second-whitest state in the U.S. after Maine. Non-Hispanic Whites account for nearly 89.1% of Vermont’s population. Irish, English French, and German Americans have made up the largest European ancestry groups in Vermont. As per the Census report, Irish Americans made up 16.8% of the population and number 104,726 members. English Americans made up 16.1% of the population and number 100,545
French Americans made up 10.1% of the population and number 62,988 followed by German ancestry at 9.3 % of the population and number 58,257.
In 2020, 8.1% of the population considered themselves to be of only American ancestry (regardless of race or ethnicity). Many of these were of English or Scotch-Irish descent; however, their families have lived in the state for so long that they choose to identify as having “American” ancestry or do not know their ancestry. Some of their ancestry dates to the original thirteen colonies.
Multi-Race in Vermont
