Ethnic and Racial Percentage

In 2020, the Asian population was the largest racial or ethnic group in Hawaii, comprising 36.53% of the total population. It was followed by the White (non-Hispanic) population whose share was 21.60%.

Two or more races population was the third largest group at 20.66%. Native Hawaiian population share was 10.24% & Hispanic or Latino at 9.55%.

Asian Americans in Hawaii

Asian Americans are the largest group in Hawaii. Americans of Asian descent formed 36.53 % of the population. Hawaii has the highest percentage of Asian Americans and multiracial Americans. It is the only state where people who identify as Asian Americans are the largest ethnic group. 

Hawaii’s Asian population consists mainly of 198,000 (14.6%) Filipino Americans, 185,000 (13.6%) Japanese Americans, roughly 55,000 (4.0%) Chinese Americans, and 24,000 (1.8%) Korean Americans.

Natai Hawaii and Pacific Islanders in Hawaii

Native Hawaii Americans made up 10.24% of Hawaii’s population and numbered 149,054 individuals as of 2020.  There are more than 80,000 Indigenous Hawaiians, about 5.9% of the population. Including those with partial ancestry, Samoan Americans constitute 2.8% of Hawaii’s population, and Tongan Americans constitute 0.6%

Multi-Race in Hawaii

Multiracial individuals also form a good percentage in Hawaii and they are the third-largest group. People identifying as multiracial form 20.06%  of the population, and number around 291,890 people.  Eurasian Americans are a prominent mixed-race group, numbering about 5%.

Hispanics and Latinos in Hawaii

Hispanics and Latinos are the fourth largest groups in Hawaii. Around 9.55% of Hawaii’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity.  Mexican Americans number over 35,000 (2.6%); Puerto Ricans exceed 44,000 (3.2%).

African Americans in Hawaii

African Americans are a smaller minority in the state. As of 2020, those of African ancestry accounted for 1.50% of Hawaii’s population.

Native Americans are a smaller minority in the state. Native Americans made up 0.16% of Hawaii’s population and number 2,321 individuals as of 2020.
