European Ancestry in Georgia

Non-Hispanics White account for nearly 50% of Georgia’s population. English, Irish, and German Americans have made up the three largest European ancestry groups in Georgia.

As per the Census report, English Americans made up 7.1% of the population and numbered over 0.75 million members. Irish Americans made up 6.5%  of the population and numbered over 0.7 million. 

German Americans made up 6% of the population and numbered over 0.63 million followed by Italian ancestry at 2.1%  of the population and numbered over 227,447.

Other Europeans who make good numbers are Scottish (1.6%), French (1.3%), Polish (1.1%), Scotch-Irish (1.1%), Dutch (0.50%), Swedish (0.40%), Norwegian (0.40%), Welsh (0.50%) and Russians (0.40%).

African Americans in Georgia

As of 2020, those of African ancestry accounted for 30.60% of Georgia’s population. According to census estimates, Georgia ranks third among the states in terms of the percent of the total population that is African American (after Mississippi and Louisiana) and second in numerical Black population after Texas.

A substantial proportion of Georgia’s African American population resides in the Atlanta metropolitan area, where they make up 50% of the city’s population and 34% of the metro population. Other urban areas, such as Augusta, Columbus, Macon, and Savannah, also host significant Black populations. Additionally, there are numerous Black residents living in smaller cities, towns, and rural areas across the state.

Hispanics and Latinos in Georgia

Hispanics and Latinos are the third-largest groups in Georgia after non-Hispanic whites and African Americans. Around 11% of Georgia’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity.  According to 2018, US Census Bureau estimates, the majority of Hispanics in Georgia are of Mexican descent followed by Puerto Rican and Guatemalan descent.

Asian Americans in Georgia

Americans of Asian descent formed 4.4% of the population.  Georgia had the second-fastest-growing Asian population growth in the U.S. from 1990 to 2000, more than doubling in size during the ten-year period.  The Asian population in Georgia is diverse with the largest group being Indians followed by Chinese and Vietnamese.
