Sub-Saharan African population in United States
Sub-Saharan African Americans come from Sub-Sahara Africa regions in Africa and do not constitute a homogeneous group. They include people from different national, linguistic, ethnic, racial, cultural, and social backgrounds. As such, US and foreign-born Sub-Saharan Africans are distinct from native-born African Americans, many of whose ancestors were involuntarily brought from West and Central Africa to the colonial United States by means of the historic Atlantic slave trade.

Sub- Saharan Africans by Nation of Origin
Sub-Saharan Africans make up 1.1% of the U.S. population and according to the 2020 U.S. census, there are 3,814,153. Sub-Saharan African Americans in the United States. More than half (51%) of sub-Saharan African migrants living in the U.S. as of 2017 were born in just four countries: Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Kenya. In the U.S., between 2010 and 2017, several sub-Saharan migrant populations increased, including those from Nigeria (70,000 individuals), Ethiopia (70,000), and Ghana (40,000).
In the U.S., migrants from sub-Saharan Africa can be found across the country, with 42% in the American South, 24% in the Northeast, 18% in the Midwest, and 17% in the West. The largest subgroup is by far the Nigerian Americans with 466,921, Ethiopian Americans with 327,760, and Somali Americans with 159,595.
