Religion in Utah

The United States had rich and diverse religious cultures, and the freedom to practice beliefs has helped give rise to a highly unique religious pluralism and freedom. Utah is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. Christianity is the majority religion in Utah and Mormons (Later Day Saints) are the largest religious group. It has the largest Latter-day Saint population in the United States.

Since the 1990s, the religious share of Christians has decreased, while Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism, and other religions have spread, mainly from immigration.

Utah Religion Percentage

Christianity is the largest religion followed by 73% of the population. The largest Christian denomination in Utah is Mormons/LDS Church (55%) followed by Protestants  (13%), Roman Catholics (5%), and Other Christians. 

Non-Christian faiths account for 4%, and the remaining 22% are classified as unaffiliated, which can mean agnostic, atheist, or “nothing in particular.”

Other Religions include Hinduism, Buddhism, Jews, Islam, and other smaller faiths.

Christianity in Utah

Christianity with 73% followers is the largest religion in Utah. Among Christians, Mormons (Latter-day Saints) with 55% followers is the largest denomination. According to the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA), the largest denomination by adherents in 2020 is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with 2,126,216 members.

All Protestant denominations accounted for 13% of the population, and Catholics are 5% of the population. Rest include Eastern Orthodoxy, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other smaller denominations.

Protestantism in Utah

Among Christians in Utah, Protestantism is the second largest group comprising about 13% of the state’s population. Protestantism in the United States has branched out into several branches, denominations, and various interdenominational and related movements. 

Protestants by tradition can be further classified into three main denominations. Evangelical is the largest and followed by 7% of the population, Next are Mainline Protestants (6%) and Historically Black Protestants (<1%)

Catholics in Utah

Catholic Church at 5% of the state population is the third largest religious grouping, after LDS Church and Protestantism. According to the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA), In 2020 the Catholic Church has 213,155 adherents.

Since the 1990s, the religious share of Christians has decreased, while Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism, and other religions have spread, mainly from immigration. Other Religions include Hinduism, Buddhism, Jews, Islam, and other smaller faiths.
