Religion in Arizona

The United States had rich and diverse religious cultures, and the freedom to practice beliefs has helped give rise to a highly unique religious pluralism and freedom. Arizona is the US state with the 14th largest population, Christianity being the majority religion and Protestantism as its largest branch. 

Since the 1990s, the religious share of Christians has decreased, while Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism, and other religions have spread, mainly from immigration.

Christianity is the main religion followed by 67% of the population. The largest Christian denomination in Arizona is Protestants (39%) followed by Roman Catholics (21%), Mormonism (5%), Jehovah’s Witnesses (1%), and Other Christian (1%).

27% of the population don’t follow or adhere to any faith or religion and the rest 6% follow other non-Christian-based religions.

Other Religions include Hinduism (1%), Buddhism(1%), Jews (2%), Islam (1%), and other smaller faiths (2%)

Christianity in Arizona

Christianity with 67% followers is the largest in Arizona. All Protestant denominations accounted for 39% of the population, Catholics are 21% of the population and are the largest individual denomination if Protestantism is divided into various denominations instead of being counted as a single category. 

Of the Protestants in the state, Evangelical Protestants compose 26% of the population, Mainline Protestants 12%, and Historically Black Protestants 1%.

Rest include Mormons,  Eastern Orthodoxy, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other smaller denominations. 

The three largest denominational groups in Arizona were the Catholic Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and non-denominational Evangelical Protestants.

Catholics in Arizona

Catholic Church at 21 % of the state population is the second largest religious grouping, after Protestantism. According to the Association of Religion Data Archives  (2020), the largest denominational group in Arizona is the Catholic Church which has the highest number of adherents in Arizona at 1,522,410.

Hinduism in Arizona

Hinduism is the second-largest practiced religion, after Christianity, in Arizona, according to the U.S. Religious Congregations & Membership Study from 2010. The study showed there are nearly 33,000 people who belong to approximately 35 Hindu congregations throughout the state.

Jews in Arizona

Arizona is home to ~115,000 Jewish adults, comprising 2.1% of the state’s population. The majority (~80%) of Jewish adults in Arizona reside in five congressional districts that include parts of Tucson, Phoenix, and other metropolitan areas within Maricopa County.
