The population is mainly Afro-Caribbean. European, Indian (Tamil, Telugu, and other South Indians), Lebanese, Syrians, and Chinese are all minorities. There is also a substantial population of Haitians in Guadeloupe who work mainly in construction and as street vendors.[49] Basse-Terre is the political capital; however, the largest city and economic hub is Pointe-à-Pitre.
