Haiti Population 2024

Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti and formerly known as Hayti is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean Sea. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island which it shares with the Dominican Republic. It’s the third-largest country by area and the most populous country in the Caribbean. As per the UN World Population Prospects report, the population of Haiti in 2023 is 11,867,030 (11.8 million)

Religion in Haiti

Haiti is predominantly a Christian country,  and 85% follow Christianity. The Catholics make up the largest Christian group in the country, they are estimated to be about 55-57 percent of the population. Protestantism is followed by 28.5-30% of the population. 10% of the Population is unaffiliated and 3% of the population follows other religions.

Haitian Vodou

The New World Afro-diasporic religion of Vodou is also practiced in  Haiti. Vodou encompasses several different traditions and consists of a mix encompassing African, European and indigenous Taíno religious elements.  

The CIA World Factbook reports that 2.1% of the population identifies its religion as Vodou, but adds that “many Haitians practice elements of Vodou in addition to another religion, most often Roman Catholicism.

Haiti has small communities of Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and members of the Baháʼí Faith.

Ethnic composition in Haiti

Most Haitians are descendants of former black African slaves, including Mulattoes who are mixed-race. The remainder are of European or Arab descent, the descendants of settlers.

Haiti population is approximately 85% Black Creole. The remaining population of Haiti is primarily composed of Mulattoes, Europeans, Asians, and Arabs. Hispanic residents in Haiti are mostly Cuban and Dominican. About two-thirds of Haitian people live in rural areas.
