Dominica, officially known as the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country in the Caribbean and part of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles archipelago. The island lies between the French overseas territories of Guadeloupe to the northwest and Martinique to the south-southeast. Dominica’s capital city, Roseau, is located on the western coast of the island.
Dominica covers a land area of approximately 751 sq. km (290 sq. mi) and is known for its rugged terrain and volcanic peaks. The island’s highest point is Morne Diablotins, rising to 1,448 meters (4,751 feet) above sea level. According to the UN World Population Prospects, the population of Dominica in 2026 is estimated at 73,984, ranking it 18th in the Caribbean by population.
With its relatively large land area and small population, Dominica has a population density of about 96 people per sq. km. The country is an independent sovereign state and is often referred to as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean” due to its lush landscapes and biodiversity.
