Haitian Population in United States

Haitian Americans are people who self-identified as of Caribbean origin; this includes immigrants from Haiti and those who trace their family ancestry to Haiti. As per US Census 2020, an estimated 1.2 million people of Haitian origin resided in the United States.

They are a sub-group of West Indian Americans* and are the Second largest population of West Indian origin living in the United States after Jamaican Americans, accounting for 34% of the West Indian American population. The vast majority of Haitian  Americans are of black African-Caribbean descent, and many are also of full or partial Indian, Arab, and European descent.

*West Indian Americans are also known as English-speaking Caribbean* immigrants and they trace their ancestry to the Caribbean. Caribbean Americans which is a wider term are a multi-ethnic and multi-racial group that trace their ancestry further in time mostly to Africa, as well as Asia, the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, and Europe.

Haitian Population by U.S. State

Haitian Americans make up 0.31% of the U.S. population and Haitian are the second largest population of West Indians after Jamaicans living in the United States. The largest state by Haitian population is Florida (48%), New York (18%), and Massachusetts (8%).

New York Metro area with 330,275 people of Haitian ancestry, has the largest population of Haitian Americans. It’s followed by New York (226,642) and the Boston metro area (70,682).
