Georgia is a state in the Southeastern region of the United States. Its border is to the north by Tennessee and North Carolina; to the northeast by South Carolina; to the southeast by the Atlantic Ocean; to the south by Florida; and to the west by Alabama. 

Georgia is the eighth-most populous state in the United States. Georgia ranks 18th in the United States in population density. As per the  United States Census Bureau, the population of Georgia in 2020 is 10,711,908 (10.7 million)

Population Projections

As for the present and the future, continued population growth is expected. Georgia continues to grow at greater than 1% per year, which makes it one of the faster-growing states in the country (12th). According to a projection released in 2010 by the state of Georgia, the population was expected to reach 14.7 million by 2030.

Religion and affilations

Christianity is the majority religion in Georgia followed by 79% of the population. The largest Christian denomination in Georgia is Protestant (67%) followed by Roman Catholics (9%). Next comes the Unaffiliated population, 18% of the population doesn’t follow or adhere to any faith or religion.

Other non-Christian-based religions and faiths are followed by 3% of the population and include Hinduism, Buddhism, Jews, Islam, and other smaller faiths.

Race and Ethnicity in Georgia

In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in Georgia, comprising 50.06% of the total population. It was followed by the African American population whose share was 30.60%. Hispanic or Latino was the third largest group at 10.49%. The Asian population is fourth with a share of 4.44%. Two or more races are at 3.64%.

Georgia Language

85.95% of Georgia residents speak only English, while 14.05% speak other languages. The non-English language spoken by the largest group is Spanish, which is spoken by 8.02% of the population.

Atlanta Georgia’s capital is the most populous city, with a 2020 U.S. Census population of just over 498,000. It’s followed by Columbus and Augusta Richmond. The state has seventeen cities with populations over 50,000, based on official 2020 U.S. Census data. 

As of 2022, Georgia is divided into 159 counties.  The county with the highest population in Georgia is Fulton county, with over 1 million residents. Its followed by Gwinnett County (964,564) and Cobb County (766,802)
