Religion in Hawaii

Hawaii had rich and diverse religious cultures, and the freedom to practice beliefs has helped give rise to a highly unique religious pluralism and freedom. Native Hawaiians continue to engage in traditional religious and spiritual practices today, often adhering to Christian and traditional beliefs at the same time. Christianity is the majority religion and Protestantism is its largest branch. 

Despite Protestants having the majority still Hawaii has a good percentage of Catholics and Buddhists. Since the 1990s, the religious share of Christians has decreased, while Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism, and other religions have spread, mainly from immigration.

Christianity is the main religion followed by 63% of the population. The largest Christian denomination in Hawaii is Protestants (38%) followed by Roman Catholics (20%), Mormonism (3%), Jehovah’s Witness (1%), and Other Christians.

Non-Christian faiths account for 10%, and the remaining 26% are classified as unaffiliated, which can mean agnostic, atheist, or “nothing in particular.”

The second largest religion is Buddhism, which is concentrated in the Japanese community, and comprises a larger proportion of the population than any other state. Other Religions include Hinduism, Jews, Islam, and other smaller faiths.

Christianity with 63% followers is the largest religion in Hawaii. All Protestant denominations accounted for 38% of the population. Catholics are 20% of the population and are the largest individual denomination, if Protestantism is divided into various denominations instead of being counted as a single category.

Among Christians in Hawaii, Protestantism is the largest group comprising about 38% of the state’s population. Protestantism in the United States has branched out into several branches, denominations, and various interdenominational and related movements. 

Protestants by tradition can be further classified into three main denominations. Evangelical is the largest and followed by 25% of the population, Next are Mainline Protestants (11%), and Black Church (2%)

Catholics in Hawaii

Catholic Church at 20% of the state population is the second largest religious grouping, after Protestantism. According to the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA), the largest denomination by adherents in 2010 was the Catholic Church with 269,726 adherents followed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( 75,009), and Buddhism, Mahayana (46,778)

The second largest religion is Buddhism, which is concentrated in the Japanese community, and comprises a larger proportion of the population than any other state.
