Ethnic and Racial Composition
In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in New Jersey, comprising 51.85% of the total population. It was followed by the Hispanic or Latino population whose share was 21.56%.
Black or African American was the third largest group at 12.42%. Asian population also has a good percentage in New Jersey with a share of 10.15%. Two or more races are at 3.12%.

As per Census Studies an estimate Italian, Irish, German, Polish and English have made the five largest ancestry groups in New Jersey.
In 2020, 3.20% of the population considered themselves to be of only American ancestry (regardless of race or ethnicity). Many of these were of English or Scotch-Irish descent; however, their families have lived in the state for so long that they choose to identify as having “American” ancestry or do not know their ancestry. Some of their ancestry dates to the original thirteen colonies.

European in New Jersey
Non-Hispanic Whites account for nearly 52% of New Jersey’s population. Italian, Irish, and German Americans have made up the three largest European ancestry groups in New Jersey.
As per the Census report, Italian Americans made up 15% of the population and numbered over 1.3 million members. Irish Americans made up 12.7% of the population and number over 1.1 million.
German Americans made up 9.2% of the population and numbered close to 0.8 million followed by Polish ancestry at 5.3% of the population and numbered close to 0.5 million.
Other European ancestries who make good numbers are English (4.6%). Russian (1.7%), Hungarian (1%), and French (1%)
Hispanics and Latinos in New Jersey
Hispanics and Latinos are the second-largest groups in New Jersey after non-Hispanic European Americans. Around 22% of New Jersey’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity.
New Jersey’s Latino population comprises substantial concentrations of Dominican Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, Cuban Americans, Mexican Americans, Central Americans, Peruvian Americans, Colombian Americans, and Ecuadorian Americans. New Jersey is also home to a large Brazilian American and Portuguese-speaking population.
African Americans in New Jersey
As of 2020, those of African ancestry accounted for 12.42% of New Jersey’s. The black population of New Jersey increased from 1.28 million in 2010 to 1.34 million in 2019 growing at an average annual rate of 0.46%.
African American (or black) residents lived in all but six small municipalities. Newark had the largest number of African American residents in the state followed by Jersey City. These two cities plus Essex County’s East Orange and Irvington Township, Passaic County’s Paterson, Mercer County’s Trenton, Camden County’s Camden, Union County’s Elizabeth and Plainfield, and Burlington County’s Willingboro Township round out the state’s ten municipalities with the largest black population.
Asian Americans in New Jersey
Asian Americans are a sizable minority group in New Jersey. Americans of Asian descent formed 10.15% of the population. Its ethnic Asian population has grown rapidly since the late 1990s; the majority are Indians, Filipinos, Korean, and ethnic Chinese.
New Jersey has the third-highest Asian Indian population of any state by absolute numbers and the highest by percentage. India Square, in Bombay, Jersey City, and Hudson County, is home to the highest concentration of Asian Indians in the Western Hemisphere. Meanwhile, Central New Jersey, particularly Edison and surrounding Middlesex County, is prominently known for its significant concentration of Asian Indians.
New Jersey has the third largest Korean population, with Bergen County home to the highest Korean concentration per capita of any U.S. county. New Jersey also has the fourth-largest Filipino population, and fourth-largest Chinese population, per the 2010 U.S. Census.
Hudson County’s Jersey City and Middlesex County’s Edison Township continued to have the largest Asian populations. Four other municipalities in Middlesex County (Woodbridge, Piscataway, and South Brunswick) and
Morris County (Parsippany-Troy Hills) also had large Asian populations.
