Honduras Population and Religion

Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. It is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and the north by the Gulf of Honduras.

As per the UN World Population Prospects, the population of Honduras in 2023 is 10,759,407 (10.7 million) and According to the National Institute of Statistics, Honduras population of Honduras as of Feb 2022 is 9,402,602 (9.4 million)

Religion in Honduras

Christianity is the largest religion in Honduras and  82.9% of the population follows Christianity. Among Christians in Honduras, Catholics have the most adherents followed by the Evangelical Protestant.

For the Latest estimates, According to the 2020 report by the Latino barometer,  38.1% of the population followed Roman Catholicism and 43%  are Protestants (37.1% Evangelical;  2.6% Pentecostal; 1.9% Baptism; 0.3% Adventist and 0.4% others protestant churches). Other Christians include 0.9% Jehovah’s Witnesses, and 0.9% Mormon.

About 17% of the population don’t affiliate with any religion. Non-Christian-based faiths population is at 0.2%.

Non-Christian Faith includes Jewish, Islam, Baháʼí Faith, and Buddism are the main minority religions.

Race and Ethnicity in Honduras

Honduras is a multi-ethnic nation, home to people of different races, ethnicity, and national backgrounds.

The majority of the Honduras population is composed of mestizos, roughly 80%. Mestizos are mixed Amerindian and European ancestry (majority of them being of Spanish descent)

About 8% of Nicaraguans are indigenous, the descendants of the country’s original inhabitants. The majority of Amerindians in Honduras are Lenca, followed by the Miskito, Cho’rti’, Tolupan, Pech and Sumo.

3% of Nicaragua’s population is white, with the remaining 2.9% of Nicaragua’s population is black and mainly African ancestry. 

The majority of blacks in Honduran are culturally ladino, meaning they are culturally Latino. Non-ladino groups in Honduras include the Black Carib, Miskito, Arab immigrants and the black population of the Islas de la Bahía. The Miskito population (about 10,000 individuals) are the descendants of African and British immigrants and are extremely racially diverse.

While the Black Carib and Miskito populations have similar origins, Black Caribs are considered black while Miskitos are considered indigenous. 

The majority of Arab Hondurans are of Palestinian and Lebanese descent They are known as “turcos” in Honduras because of migration during the rule of the Ottoman Empire.
