Religion in Germany
Christianity is the largest religion in Germany and 52.7% of the population are Christians. Among Christians Catholics are at 26%, next are the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD) (23.7%), Eastern Orthodox (1.9%), and other Christians. 42% of the German population is classified as unaffiliated, which can mean agnostic, atheist, or “nothing in particular.” As per the various survey, the majority of the unaffiliated population are born Christians
Islam is the second largest religion in Germany and is followed by 3.5% of the population. Other Religions include Alawites (0.8%), Buddhism (0.2%), Judaism (0.1%), Hinduism (0.1%), Yazidi (0.1%), and smaller faiths. (0.4%).

Germany Historical Population
Germany had a slow population growth rate in the last 4-5 decades. It has a low birth rate & since 1970 deaths have been more than births. The fertility rate is also low & hovered around 1.4 to 1.5 for the past few decades.
The overall population growth is due to immigration to Germany. In 2019 the number of people with foreign backgrounds was 26%. In the 19th & early 20th centuries, Germany large numbers of Germans emigrated to the US, Latin America, Canada, and Eastern Europe. In recent years Germany also has taken a large number of refugees from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

German Diaspora
People of German ancestry form an important group in several countries in North and South America. German Americans are the largest of the self-reported ancestry groups in the United States and it’s estimated at around 43 million.
It also forms an important group in Canada (roughly 10% of the population), Argentina (roughly 8% of the population), Brazil (roughly 3% of the population), and Chile (roughly 3% of the population).
