Uruguay Population (2026 Overview)
Uruguay, officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, is a country in southeastern South America. It borders Argentina to the west and southwest, Brazil to the north and northeast, and has a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Despite being one of the smaller countries on the continent, Uruguay is known for its high standard of living, highly urbanized population, and stable economy.
According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Uruguay’s population as of 31 May 2023 was 3,499,451 (about 3.5 million). As of 2026, the estimated population of Uruguay is approximately 3.42 million, with the majority of residents living in urban areas, particularly in and around the capital city, Montevideo.

Religion in Uruguay
Uruguay is one of the most secular countries in South America. While Christianity is the largest religion, only 42.4% of the population identifies as Christian. The majority of Uruguayans are irreligious, making up 53% of the population. Among Christians, Catholics are the largest group, followed by Protestants.

Race and Ethnicity in Uruguay
Uruguay is a largely European-descended nation, with the majority of its population identifying as White or of European ancestry. According to the 2023 Census, 86% of Uruguayans identify as White or of European descent, while 10.4% identify as Black or of African ancestry.
White Uruguayans primarily descend from colonial-era settlers and later European immigrants, mainly from Spain and Italy, with smaller communities of French, German, Portuguese, British, Irish, Swiss, and other European and Middle Eastern origins.
Indigenous peoples account for 6.3% of the population, while about 1% identify as East Asian, mainly of Lebanese/Syrian Arab, Chinese, or Japanese ancestry. Smaller populations of Western Asian (including Turkish and Israeli) and Caucasian ethnic groups such as Armenians and Georgians are also present.

In contrast, Latinobarómetro 2024, which is based on self-identified race rather than ancestry, presents a more mixed picture of Uruguay’s population. The survey identifies Mestizos as the largest group (42.2%), followed by White (23.3%), Indigenous (10.5%), and Afro-descendant populations (Black and Mulatto combined at over 11%), reflecting methodological differences between census ancestry data and survey-based self-identification.
