A county is an administrative subdivision of a US state or territory. As of 2022, Pennsylvania is divided into 67 counties. Bucks County is the oldest one (established in 1682) while Lackawanna County is the newest (established in 1878). 

Philadelphia county with a population of 1.5 million is the most populous county in Pennsylvania and Cameron County is the least populated. Lycoming County (1,244 sq. mi.) is the largest county by area and Montour County is the smallest by area.

Most Populous Counties in Pennsylvania

The most populous county in Pennsylvania is Philadelphia County with 1.5 million residents.  Philadelphia County is one of the three original counties, along with Chester and Bucks counties, created by William Penn in November 1682. It was followed by Allegheny County (1.23 million) and Montgomery County (0.86 million).
