Ethnic and Racial Percentage

In 2020, the White alone (non-Hispanic) population was the largest racial or ethnic group in Washington State, comprising 63.84% of the total population. It was followed by the Hispanic or Latino population whose share was 13.75%.

Asian American was the third largest group at 9.38%. Two or more races population are at 6.63% and African Americans are at 3.84%.

European ancestry in Washington

Non-Hispanic Whites account for nearly 63.84% of Washington’s population. German, English and Irish Americans have made up three of the largest European ancestry groups in Washington. As per the Census report, German Americans made up 14.5% of the population and numbered 1,103,439 members.

English Americans made up 9.9% of the population and numbered 751,560 . Irish Americans made up 9.8% of the population and numbered 745,475 followed by Norwegian ancestry at 4.5% of the population and number 345,901 .

Hispanics and Latinos in Washington

Hispanics and Latinos are the Second-largest groups in Washington. Around 13.75% of Washington’s Population claims Hispanic or Latin American ethnicity. The Hispanic population in Washington is the 12th largest in the nation. About 1,059,213 Hispanics reside in Washington, 1.6% of all Hispanics in the United States.

In 2020, the highest percentages of Hispanic residents were found in central Washington with Adams (69.2%), Franklin (55.9%), and Yakima (51.9%) counties posting the highest shares.

African Americans in Washington

As of 2020, those of African ancestry accounted for 3.84% of Washington’s population. While the population of African Americans in the Pacific Northwest is relatively scarce overall, they are mostly concentrated in the South End and Central District areas of Seattle, and in inner Tacoma.

Asian Americans in Washington

Asian Americans are a minority group in Washington. Americans of Asian descent formed 9.38% of the population. Its ethnic Asian population has grown rapidly since the late 1990s; the majority are Chinese, Indiansm Filipinos, Vietnamese, Korean and Taiwanese.

Asian Americans are mostly concentrated in the Seattle−Tacoma metropolitan area of the state. Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond, which are all within King County, have sizable Chinese communities (including Taiwanese), as well as significant Indian and Japanese communities.

Koreans are heavily concentrated in the suburban cities of Federal Way and Auburn to the south, and in Lynnwood to the north. Tacoma is home to thousands of Cambodians, and has one of the largest Cambodian-American communities in the United States, along with Long Beach, California, and Lowell, Massachusetts.  The Vietnamese and Filipino populations of Washington are mostly concentrated within the Seattle metropolitan area.

Multi-Race in Washington

Multiracial individuals are also a visible minority in Washington. People identifying as multiracial form 6.63% of the population, and number around 511,114 people.
