Romania is a country situated at the intersection of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. It is the twelfth largest country and the ninth most populous country in Europe. According to Institutul Național de Statistică, As of 1st January 2021, The population of Romania is 19,186,000, a decrease of 142,600 persons compared to 1st January 2020 and the estimated population of Romania in 2024 is 19,051,562 (19 million)

Religion in Romania

Christianity is the majority religion in Romania 94% of the population identifies themselves as Christians. Romania has the world’s third-largest Eastern Orthodox population and 81.0% of the population belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Church. Other denominations include Protestantism (6.2%), Roman Catholicism (4.3%), and Greek Catholicism (0.8%). 

 6.2% of the Population is classified as unaffiliated, which can mean agnostic, atheist, or “nothing in particular.” Other religion at 1.50%  includes Muslims (mostly of Turkish and Tatar ethnicity) and Jewish. Other religions are very small in numbers.

Romania Historical Population

Romania’s population is 6 million at the start of the 20th century & peaked in 1990. In 1990, Romania’s population was estimated to be 23.21 million inhabitants & declined steadily since then. 

Population decline can be attributed to high mortality, a low fertility rate after 1989, and tremendous emigration. Romania continues to be a country of emigration, the phenomenon of emigration being the second cause main cause of population decline in the country.
