Finnish Ancestry in United States

Finnish Americans are Americans who have full or partial Finnish ancestry and with ancestral roots from Finland or Finnish people who emigrated to and reside in the United States. People of Finnish ancestry form a minority group in several countries in North and South America. As per the estimates, the total population of Finnish ancestry is around 1 million in the Americas.

According to the United States Ancestry Census 2020, there were 644,850 (0.20% of the U.S. population) people of Finnish descent in the U.S.

Top 10 U.S. States by Finnish Population

Population wise Minnesota (99,823) has the largest number of people with Finnish Ancestry followed by Michigan (93,187), California (52,422), Washington (48,091), and Wisconsin (37,949). Percentage-wise, the top US states with Finnish Ancestry are Minnesota (1.78%), Michigan (0.93%), Wisconsin (0.65%), Montana (0.64%), and Washington (0.64%)

The Minneapolis Metro area with 40,639 people of Finnish ancestry, has the largest population of Finnish Americans. It’s followed by Detroit (24,787) and  Seattle (18,818).
